Surgical removal of skin moles is a safe and effective way to permanently get rid of unwanted pigmented lesions. This procedure is particularly suitable for larger, raised, or suspicious moles that require histological examination. The operation is performed under local anaesthetic and leaves only a slight scar after healing.

Types of skin marks and skin tags that we remove:

  • Birthmarks
  • Red spots
  • Skin tags
  • Fibromas
  • Warts

Surgical excision of moles: When is surgery the best solution?

Most of the skin marks can be removed surgically. However, some of the surface or aesthetically disturbing formations can be more suitably removed by means of less invasive methods such as laser therapy or abrasion. These methods are often preferred for surface lesions that do not present a danger of malignancy. Our clinic offers the most advanced methods such as plasma-removal, cryotherapy (CryoPen) or scalpel excision electrocauter.

Conversely, if the skin mark shows signs of malignancy or if it is located in deeper skin layers, surgical removal is usually necessary in order to ensure complete removal and a histological examination. Moreover, this method guarantees more precise removal and lower risk or recurrence in certain types of skin changes.

The below-mentioned skin problems can only be treated by surgical removal (not even by Plasma pen or cryotherapy):

  • brown-colour marks
  • skin growths on the eye or its vicinity (e.g. xantelasma)*
  • skin tags on the genitals and their surrounding area**
  • skin tags on the face
  • skin tags on the scalp

*Xantelasma

Xanthelasma is a visible skin condition characterised by yellowish to brown spots and growths that mainly occur around the eyes and at the root of the nose. It commonly affects middle-aged and older persons and is associated with high cholesterol. Xanthelasma can be surgically removed, often in conjunction with eyelid surgery. However, we do not specialise in the removal of xanthelasma at eveclinic and do not perform this procedure.

**Skin tags on the genitals and the surrounding area.

Skin growths on and around the genitals can be caused by various factors, including certain sexually transmitted diseases. Therefore, any such growths must be examined by a dermatovenerologist to ensure an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment and removal method. We do not remove this type of skin growth at our clinic.

Prior to surgical removal of skin marks

Before having a skin mark removed, you will need to undergo an examination by a dermatologist. This examination is not provided by our clinic, so clients must arrange it themselves. The results of the examination must not be older than three months before the excision.

Who is this treatment suitable for?

We recommend this treatment to patients who:

  • Have aesthetic concerns about visible marks on the face or body.
  • Have noticed changes in the looks of the marks and have consulted their removal with a dermatologist.
  • Need to have the marks removed upon a dermatologist's recommendation.
  • Feel discomfort or pain in the skin tag area.

What is the process for the surgical removal of birthmarks?

The procedure begins withCare and healing after mole removal the mole area being numbed with local anaesthetic. This anaesthetic ensures that the patient feels no pain during the entire procedure. The doctor then uses sterile surgical instruments to expertly remove the skin mark.

To rule out the presence of malignant changes, a histological examination is carried out on all formations. After the removal, the wound is carefully treated. The doctor may use sutures to improve the healing process and minimize scarring. If the surgery is simple, the doctor may use a special covering or another method to close the wound.

The whole procedure usually takes only several tens of minutes, depending on the number and size of removed formations.

Care and healing after mole removal

After the treatment, the doctor informs the patient about the follow-up care to avoid complications and ensure the best possible aesthetic result.

In order to ensure correct healing and minimize the risk of complications, you need to follow the following recommendations after surgical removal of a skin mark or skin tag:

  • Avoid direct sunlight: Protect the operated area from the sun for at least several months following the surgery. If exposed to sunlight, use sun creams with a high protection factor (SPF 50) to avoid hyperpigmentation or darkening of the scar.
  • Follow your doctor's instructions for wound care: Keep the wound clean and dry. After removing the original wound cover, wash the wound gently with water without soap, dry it with clean gauze and use the recommended disinfectant. Then cover the wound with a sterile plaster following the doctor's instruction.
  • Limit physical activity: Avoid strenuous activities and exercises which could cause tension in the wound area for at least the first 1-2 weeks after the surgery.
  • Apply moisturising and healing creams: After removing the stitches and complete healing (usually after 2-3 weeks), you can start using moisturising creams or ointments that promote scar healing. Consult your doctor before you start using the particular product.

Possible complications

Although surgical removal of skin marks and skin tags is generally safe, the following complications may occur:

  • Infection: Infection is manifested by redness, swelling, pain or purulent discharge from the wound. If you notice these symptoms, contact your doctor.
  • Bleeding or haematoma: Slight bleeding after the treatment is normal, but if you experience excessive or persistent bleeding, seek medical assistance.
  • Abnormal scar: In some cases, you can experience a hypertrophic or keloid scar, which is thicker and more pronounced. The risk is higher in areas with stretched skin or for persons with predisposition to this type of scar.
  • Allergic reaction to materials: In rare cases, you can experience an allergic reaction to the suture or plaster.

Price

The price of the surgery depends on the number, type and location of the skin marks. Skin marks on the face can only be removed by a plastic surgeon. Other skin marks on the body or limbs can be removed by a general surgeon. You can find detailed price information in our price list.
